About half an hour outside of Detroit you can find the Cranbrook Institute of Science, which is a great little museum off the beaten path in Bloomfield Hills. It reminds me a lot of one of my favorites childhood haunts in New Jersey: the Morris Museum. They’re both situated in neighborhoods of nice suburban towns, and both have a cozy woodland feeling created by the landscaped fields around them. Near the front entrance of the Cranbrook you can find this terrific Stegosaurus statue which was created from the same classic mould as “Steggie,” the statue outside of the Cleveland Museum of Natural History. The interior of the museum is pretty great too. They have an amazing collection of opals here, which is certainly worth checking out. For the record, I think opals are the nicest looking minerals on Earth, but I’ll have to save my thoughts on that for whenever I decide to branch out and make “cool rocks” website!
